Early one summer's morning, they were called to a site where 250 people were engaging in numerous fights. With 16 police units there, Randy's presence was requested to prevent injury to the officers and to help disperse the crowd. When Randy appeared, the subjects ceased fighting, quickly dispersed, and left in their cars.

Last August, after a car chase of a fleeing suspect, Diablo was requested to search the suspect's car. Diablo uncovered money, various drug paraphernalia, and drugs, some of which had just been used by the suspect before the chase began. The evidence lead to the suspect's conviction.

Diablo participated in a raid on a known drug house with 4 possibly armed suspects inside. Diablo found numerous drugs, numerous drug paraphernalia, drug containers, ammunition, money, and two loaded weapons located throughout several rooms in the house. Later analysis shoed that the controlled substances included crack, cocaine, and cannabis. All suspects were charged with felony drug possession and one suspect with an unrelated homicide.

Markos was called upon to search for a 21 month old boy who had been missing for three hours, after an unsuccessful search by 60 people around the home. Markos tracked for over 1/2 mile on a windy day with 20 mph gusts. The track went over lawn, rocks, and wooded areas. At one point he lifted his head and began to air scent, locating the baby 50 meters away, sleeping against a tree. The baby was returned unharmed and undaunted to his mother.

Arco made 4 separate suspect apprehensions over the past year:

After a building search, Arco located a burglary suspect who resisted arrest and struggled with the officer. Arco seized the suspect taking several blows from the suspect.

In a second building search, Arco located a concealed suspect who had fallen asleep after piling food and a money bag near an exit.

Arco was called to a home with a burglary in progress with an 11 year boy home alone. The boy was removed by officers before the search. The suspect was located in a crawl space so small that at times Arco had to crawl himself. He seized the suspect and dragged him back to the door. Arco was kicked repeatedly during this apprehension.

Arco 4th apprehension took place in a wooded area with dense under-brush. After an armed suspect was quickly located, Arco dragged him out of the underbrush while being kicked and hit repeatedly.

Tino was brought in to search for evidence in a homicide case. He searched a 200 acre planted bean field after other officers had failed to locate the weapon. In addition to the weapon, he found some of the suspect's blood stained clothing, and some tape which had been used in the crime and which may link the suspect to crimes committed outside of our area.

Tino had 2 tracking accomplishments this year. In the first, he tracked 2 burglary suspects who had abandoned their truck containing a stolen safe; both were found. In the second, he located an armed robbery suspect who had fled over streets, through dense brush, and woods.

Diablo was called upon to assist other officers who were in pursuit of fleeing suspect. One officer in close pursuit to the suspect became mired in mud, at which time the suspect rushed the officer, threating to kill him. Diablo physically intervened, knocking the suspect to the ground and holding him until other officers arrived. Later it was discovered that the suspect had a history of violence against officers.

The suspect tried to "outrun" Champ and when intercepted he attempted to fight off and kick Champ to drive him off.

Conan was called upon to assist US Customs and ATF in the search of 2 40 feet trailers which were filled with supposedly "harmless" Russian army memorabilia. He detected several instances of explosive devices, including a live rocket shell.

Conan apprehended a suspected felon who was wanted in a sex offense case. The suspect was thought to be hiding in a house. A building search turned up an unrelated person. The search began again and after indicating at the same spot in the ceiling, his handler led him away, but Conan insisted. A closer search of the space above the ceiling, revealed the wanted suspect who was hiding in a roll of attic insulation.

Arco and his handler were called to supermarket to conduct a drug search of a minivan of some suspicious subjects. After searching the vehicle, Arco did not indicate the presence of illegal controlled substances. He was then "freed" by his handler to relax while he and other officers searched further. His handler was told that Arco was indicating a find on another unsuspecting car parked a short distance from the suspect minivan. A search of this car revealed 3 waterproof bags with marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, morphine, LSD, drug paraphernalia, various automatic weapons, and $20,000 cash. Thus ending the careers of two major drug dealers.

In the wee hours of a summer's morning, Dyk was called to a rape crime scene at a county fairground. After searching the large area for close to one hour, he indicated a find. He had discovered a man's wallet and comb; other articles of clothing were found nearby. The wallet tuned out to that of the suspect's who was arrested a few hours later by officers accompanied by Dyk.

Flik was nominated for two instances involving tracking. In both cases he tracked fleeing felons: an armed robbery suspect and a burglary suspect. In one case he tracked in a residential area, through backyards to the suspect and located evidence related to the crime. In the other instance, Flik tracked through woods, open fields, and gardens in order to find his suspect. The two instances show his versatility and persitance.

Conan was called to scene of an explosion in a residential area by the Bomb and Arson Squad. Through his explosives training, he located pieces of broken glass, parts of the explosive device and located the point of detonation of the device; all of which lead to a successful closing of the case.

In pursuit of an armed car jacker, Officer Robertson, after being injured by the suspect, took up the chase again. When the suspect attempted to flee the car, Duke was sent using the automatic door activation system. Duke stopped the fleeing suspect by grabbing his leg and taking him down to the ground. When the Officer reached the vehicle, a two-year old abduction victim was recovered, unharmed.

Ceasar is certified as a Cadaver Search & Rescue dog. He was called upon to find a suspected murder victim who was supposably in one of several warehouses in an industrial complex. He located the victim under sets of fallen lockers on one building's second story. While the victim was still alive, at the time of the find, he did not recover and died of his wounds.

Rick was called on to track a fleeing suspect who had abandoned his auto. His track which exceeded one mile, following a rain storm, went across grass, a creek, a wooded area, a subdivision, and into a cemetery where the suspect was discovered and arrested.

Max was called upon to apprehend a fleeing suspect who had an existing felony warrant and who had struggled with another officer who had attempted to arrest him. Max entered a vacant house and engaged the suspect. The suspect struggled with Max and attempted to choke him by lifting him into the air at which time Max gripped the suspect in the face, causing the suspect to let go and be arrested by an officer.

Ceazar has won this honor for the second year in a row. This past year he responded to 215 requests by local law enforcement agencies, the FBI, DEA, US Customs, US Postal Inspection Service, and ATF. His numerous searches yielded $488,720 in illegal drugs and he located $1,114,155 in drug tainted US Currency. His finds included cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, ecstasy, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Team - K-9 Division

In an unusual use of a Search and Rescue dog, Cinder at the request of the FBI was brought in to search for evidence in a local serial killer case. Cinder indicated the presence of blood and other bodily fluids in the home of the suspect on surfaces that had been cleaned and even covered by new carpeting. All her finds were seized and placed into evidence.

Flik was called in to search for a fleeing robbery suspect in an area in which previous robberies had been reported. Flik took scent at the location that the suspect was last seen. He tracked over pavement, through a thickly wooded area, and across several backyards. He stopped at the rear door of a house and indicated the suspect was inside. The suspect was arrested and evidence of that robbery was recovered. Flik's actions were essential, since the suspect had covered his face the victim could not have made an identification.

Bacchaus for the second year has taken honors in this category. Bacchaus was called upon to track and find an armed burglary suspect. After an extensive search, he indicated a house, entered it, located and engaged the suspect. The suspect resisted arrest and was swinging a pole at the officers when Bacchaus readjusted his hold from the leg to the suspect's arm to stop injury to the arresting officers. The suspect was then placed in handcuffs while still trying to struggle with the officers.

5. SEARCH AND RESCUE

Team - K-9 Division

Sabra was called upon to search for a person who had been missing for 5 days. Local authorities had previously unsuccessfully search the area for this individual. Sabra located the body of the victim in a heavily wooded area, an apparent suicide.
